Plans to set up such institutes have been developed by the Health Minister.

Likewise, keeping rising cancer cases in mind, the government will also set up 70 cancer hospitals.

It is believed that this will reflect in President Pranab Mukherjee’s address to the joint sitting of both Houses of Parliament, outlining the roadmap of Narendra Modi-led government.

Harsh Vardhan, while speaking to Dainik Jagran, said that he has proposed to open 10 more AIIMS-like hospitals and state governments will be asked to send proposals in this regard.

These super speciality hospitals spread over 300 acres of land will have capacity to cater to the needs of around 800 patients.

Vardhan informed that last week he had met directors of all six AIIMS-like institutions that were set up under the UPA regime and reviewed the progress of works.

The six AIIMS-like institutes are located in Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh.

Vardhan will visit Patna, Rishikesh, Bhopal, Raipur, Bhubaneswar and Jodhpur within a month to take first hand stock of works being done at these centres.

The Health Minister said that works on proposal to set up such institutes in West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh will begin soon.

Of 70 cancer hospitals, 50 will be state level and remaining 20 will be super specialty hospitals.

The Central Government will provide 75 percent of the total expense required for setting up a state level hospital. The cost of setting up a state level hospital will be about Rs 130 crore.

Ahead of the budget, likely to come up in the first week of July, Varhdan will also hold deliberations with state health ministers.

AIIMS to be converted into ‘green hospital’: Harsh Vardhan

Vardhan has said that the country's premier medical facility AIIMS would be converted into a ‘green hospital’. He said that the plan was based on the Centre's determination to fight climate change.

"For this to happen, the country's premier medical facility should move away from using conventional energy that is responsible for polluting environment and adding green house gases," he said on Thursday.

The new-look AIIMS will have water conservation and waste water recycling systems in place.

"The unattractive facade of government hospitals should become a thing of past. Beginning with the AIIMS-New Delhi, I want all public hospitals to resonate with inclusivity and enlightenment," Vardhan said.

The Health Minister said there was scant information available on the adverse impact on health caused by ecological and environmental deprivation at local, regional and national scale.

"The movement of masses and a sizable population of migrant labourers make this mission difficult without inter-sectoral and inter-state coordination," Vardhan added.

"The United Nations, the WHO and all international institutions have warned of the dangerous link between deteriorating environment and disease outcomes. We need to fight this negative impact by applying established tools to gather information and sharing it with community for involving them in this movement of creating healthy and safe environment," he said.
