Ludhiana: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday sought President Pranab Mukherjee's intervention to impress upon the Centre to ensure proper price support mechanism for maize crop which has been proposed as an alternative to water-guzzling paddy.
Badal said this during his address at the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Punjab Agricultural University, where Mukherjee was present.

Badal lauded the research work done by PAU’s scientists in developing High Yielding Variety (HYV) seeds aimed at achieving buffer stock of foodgrains, that made the country self reliant in food production.
He also urged the President to prevail upon the Centre to sanction liberal financial grant to the PAU, which he described as the "the mother of Green Revolution".
Highlighting Punjab farmer’s contribution to the national glory and food security, Badal said they initiated the process of country’s self-dependence in food with Green Revolution in
He said Punjab has been contributing substantially to the national food kitty. The Chief Minister further said that agriculture was no
longer a remunerative profession due to which the agrarian economy of the state now needs to be bailed out of the crisis of slow growth, declining farm income and dwindling resources.
