New Delhi: Giving a breather to the Balwant Singh Rajoana, assassin of former Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh, the President on Wednesday stayed the hanging of Rajoana following a mercy petition by the SGPC, the Sikh religious body.

After holding a meeting with Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday and subsequently the President forwarded the mercy plea for Rajoana to the Union Home Ministry.

As per the present situation the clemency petition would be sent to the Law Minsitry and Punjab government for recommendations after which it would be forwarded to the President with the reference of the Home Ministry.

Chief Minister along with his son and deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and other SGPC officials went to meet the President to submit the clemency petition.    

While talking to the reporters after meeting the President the CM said, “As a CM I have always tried to maintain law and order in the state. But as this is an emotional area and issue, there is a chance of unstable and volatile situation, so we decide to meet the President.”

As per the general trend, in such cases are referred to the Law Ministry and the respective state government, but as the hanging of Rajona was scheduled to be carried out on March 31, intervention of President became necessary.   

Rajoana, a police constable and a close friend of another assassin Dilawar Singh Babbar, was the second human bomb to be used in case the first one failed to kill Beant Singh on August 31, 1995.

On Tuesday evening, Badal had met BJP top brass leaders like LK Advani, leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and state in charge Shanta Kumar to seek their support.   

However, the BJP has decided to distance itself from the demand for granting clemency to Balwant Singh Rajoana.
