New Delhi: The UPA government has not arrived at any conclusion on the death sentence awarded to the killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. With President Pratibha Patil dismissing the mercy petition, the Cabinet Committee for Political Affairs called a meeting on Thursday to discuss the resultant political situation but failed to arrive on a final decision.

The Tamil Nadu Assembly has earlier passed a proposal to commute the death sentence awarded to Rajiv’s killers Murugan, Perarivalan and Santhan and forwarded it to the union government and has appealed the Parliament to change the decision of the Supreme Court.

The hour-long CCPA meeting held on Thursday discussed the issue, but the sources revealed that the government would take some more time to arrive on a decision.

Finance Minister Sharad Pawar, Defence Minister AK Antony, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Minister of Agriculture Sharad Pawar were present in the meeting.

The government is required to take a decision within eight months of the sentence cleared by the President on August 30.
