The Centre had assured the Apex Court in April that it would not take any immediate decision on the appointment of the Lokpal. The top court was hearing a PIL challenging the selection process for appointment of Lokpal.

The selection process relating to judges has already faced a lot of flak. Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley had in January written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, expressing concern at the prospect of sitting and retired judges applying for a post.

The Prime Minister rejected Jaitley's contention and said that the advertisement was within the prescribed rules notified by the government.

According to a leading Indian daily, the rules which are sought to be amended, pertain to the applications by the sitting judges of the Apex Court for the posts of chairman and members of the Lokpal panel.

President Pranab Mukherjee had given his assent to the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill on January 1 this year. The Bill was passed by the Rajya Sabha on December 17, 2013, and by the Lok Sabha the next day.
