Hisar: Better late than never government is about to honour labour power in every district of the nation. Two labourers from each district who complete 100 days of employment under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) will be facilitated by the central government on the occasion of the MNREGA conference on February 2.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and a number of union ministers are expected to be present in the conference to be held at Vigyan Bhavan in Delhi.

According to Additional District Coordinator of Rural Development Agency, Ashok Kumar Meena, “This is for the first time when the MNREGA workers will be recognised as two from each district across the country will be facilitated by the government.” He added, “Some representatives of Panchayati Raj institutions will also be honoured on the occasion.”

The MNREGA conference aims at giving two thirds of the prize money to labourers, one third to Panchayati Raj officials and members with preference to women and scheduled castes.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, a five-member state team of Rural Development Department Secretary, MNREGA Commissioner, SIRD Director, Departmental Officer and Conference Coordinator will also be present on the ocassion.

A meeting will be held on January 18 at Krishi Bhavan in Delhi to look into the preparations of the conference. It is to be noted, the flagship programme of the Congress had proved extremely beneficial for the UPA government during the previous general elections and the party does not want to miss this opportunity in reaping political benefits.
