"Enery conservation and reducing consumption can help to save as much as Rs 50, 000 crore. One lakh crore units of electricity is produced yearly and if 10 percent of it could be saved  i.e. 10,000 crore units which is equal to Rs 50,000 crore,'' Power Minister Piyush Goyal said.

Speaking at the National Energy Conservation Day programme here on Sunday, Goyal said, “The saved money can be utilised for lighting up homes of five crore people who are still without electricity.”

During the function, the Minister also interacted with students from different parts of the country through video conferencing.

In order to spread awareness about energy efficiency, Goyal also launched a portal 'energysavers.co.in'. The portal provides several ways to help children evaluate and practice energy saving in their schools and at home as well.

Goyal also announced on the ocassion that a girls' school in Punjab will be the first school in the country where a special chapter on energy conservation would be taught.

The Union Minister further said a toll-free number will be introduced by January 31, 2015 in all
the states to receive complains if any street light remain lit during day time.

On the occasion the Minister also presented Energy conservation awards in different fields including manufacturing units, thermal power, office buildings, BPO buildings, hotels, restaurants, hospitals, shopping malls and railways station among others.
