New Delhi: In order to meet the demand of skilled workers in local industries and generate employment opportunities for youths, the Central government is planning to set up community colleges in the country.

The government expects enrollment of about one lakh students.
The colleges will provide 2-year course for developing their skill. After completion of the course, the qualified students will receive a degree.

According to sources, the colleges will enjoy full autonomy, which would be approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

The government is planning to open 100 such colleges in 2012-13 as a pilot project under the12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017). After the review of the project’s success, the government intends to set up more such colleges in the country.

Sources said, 80 UGC approved colleges and 20 AICTE approved colleges will be made available for the purpose.
