Motihari: Flaying the Centre for its stand over the location of the Central University in Bihar (CUB), Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday accused Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal of trying to divide the state over the long pending issue.

"Ignoring government's demand to establish the Central University in Motihari -- the work-place of Mahatma Gandhi – the Centre and Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal wants to set up the University in Gaya," Kumar said apparently referring to Sibal's letter to him about the Centre's decision to set university in Gaya.

The Chief Minister further said that the Centre had earlier accepted the proposal to set up the university in Motihari, but now they are politicking the matter by setting up university in Gaya.

The Union HRD Ministry and Bihar government is at loggerheads since 2009 over the location of the Central University. While Nitish government has been insistent on Motihari for the university, the HRD Ministry has been of the view that such a location would hardly attract quality faculty or students therefore, setting up a central university near Gaya international airport would be more feasible.

Interestingly, the HRD Ministry has got the required 300 acres of land in Gaya for setting up of the central university. It negotiated with the Defence Ministry for the transfer of land.

Kumar is currently on a Seva Yatra to Motihari.
