New Delhi: Speaking in a different tune from that of Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Mayor Rajni Abbi has said that every possible effort would be made to make the day of Chhath festival a public holiday.

Delhi Mayor said that keeping in mind the concept of social justice, the corporation has decided to declare the Chhath day as a public holiday. In this regard, the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act -1957 has a provision under Section 42 W-A.

In the Municipal Corporation Standing Committee meeting it was decided that November 1 would be a public holiday. A special session of the house would be called on Monday to pass this proposal.

At the press meet held at the Civic Center on Saturday, Abbi said the government is playing politics on Chhath and the Municipal Commissioner is working in tandem with it.

She said that keeping in view the religious sentiments of millions of people declaring the Chhath day as a public holiday is justified.

Abby informed that nearly 40 lakh citizens in the capital are from Bihar, Jharkhand and Purvanchal. A group of people from Purvanchal had met the BJP’s state president Vijender Gupta with a request to declare the occasion as a public holiday.
