New Delhi: In a bid to ensure that fire brigade reaches the spot of mishap on time, the Union Home Ministry firmly believes in a separate lane which should be kept reserved for emergency vehicles.

Home Minister P Chidambaram, said, “Though a target to reach the spot has been set for three to five minutes for the fire brigades, in case of Delhi it becomes impossible,” adding that by 2013, plans are afoot to set up 70 more fire stations in the national capital.

Agreeing to the fact that the fire brigades do not reach on time, Chidambaram maintained that it also depends on flow of traffic on roads and the distance between the fire station and the location.

Stressing on the need of a separate lane for such emergency vehicles, the Home Minister said, “Until have a specific lane, the aim of reaching at time cannot be met.” There should be a fire station at each kilometer, he added.

Delhi Fire Service has initiated a new project of setting up fire tender at important places. Till now fire tenders have been initiated in five new places.
