New Delhi: While clarifying the statement made on middle class, Home Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday claimed that his statements was distorted.

According to the formal clarification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Chidambaram’s behalf, the statement said Chidambaram was shocked and disgusted at the distortion of his remarks on middle class.

The statement further said that Chidambaram did not mock or chide anyone.

Chidambaram’s clarification came soon after the opposition party BJP lashed out at him over his remarks saying he has shown insensitivity towards the middle class people and ridiculed their livelihood.

Slamming the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram for his Tuesday’s statement on middle class, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Do the Home Minister knows the price of meal consumed by a common man in Delhi.”

Terming the Home Minister’s statement as ugly joke on average citizens, Prasad also raked up the 2 G scam case.    

While replying to a question on the plight of middle class in view of high food inflation and price rise, P Chidambaram had said that people were prepared to pay Rs 15 for a bottle of water and Rs 20 for a cone ice cream, but protest against rise in wheat and rice price.
