Kolkata: Concerned over the recent incidents of child deaths in the government hospitals of West Bengal, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Friday said that death of children is a matter of serious concern not only in West Bengal but across the country also .

"It is a major problem that the country is facing. Immediate and concrete actions is need of the hour”, Mukherjee told reporters outside his residence in Kolkata.

However, he also pointed out that the deceased infants were suffering from broncho-pneumonia and low birth weight that were contributors for their deaths. 

His comment came in wake of the recent death of over 30 babies in last two days at government hospitals in Malda district and B C Roy Children's hospital in Kolkata in the month of October.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held the previous Left front government responsible for the unfortunate incidents.

Avoiding comment on the recent ultimatum by Mamata over the petrol price hike, he said that the matter is already been solved after being discussed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
