Beijing: China has doubled the number of scholarships for American students who want to study in the country.

Chinese State Councillor Liu Yandong announced the 10,000 new scholarships during the second meeting of the China-US high-level consultation on people-to-people exchange held in Washington on Wednesday, official Xinhua news agency reported.

The new scholarships are made in addition to the pledge by the Chinese government last year of 10,000 "Bridge Scholarships" for American students to study in China.

Realising the strategic importance of the US-China relationship, the US government has called for more Americans to study in China, it said.
