Detroit, Jan 16 (Agencies): The cleric, who became the public face of efforts to build an Islamic center near ground zero in New York, is urging Muslims to play a role in shaping relationships with the US.

Feisal Abdul Rauf said during a speech aimed at inspiring “interfaith understanding” in Detroit, which is home to the largest Muslim population in North America, Muslims must help “depoliticize our faith”.

The non-profit behind the mosque plan announced on Friday that Rauf's role would be reduced because it needs someone available locally to build a congregation.
