Fazilka: Lambasting the Congress-led UPA government, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday said the Congress has failed to provide any concrete solution to eradicate poverty.

“The unemployment rate increased drastically during the Congress regime. It also failed to stop terrorist attacks and address the issue of Naxalism,” the Chief Minister said while addressing a public gathering in support of BJP candidate Surjit Jayani at Fazilka.

Badal said, “The Congress has become a synonymous with corruption. At present, several ministers have been sent to jail. It has failed to check corruption due to lack of political will. Why Manmohan Singh is silent while string of scams and scandals have been unearthed during the Congress regime?”

He further accused the government of trying to tarnish the image of social activist Anna Hazare who has launched anti-graft movement.

The Chief Minister was quick to add, “The wrong policies adopted by the government damaged the economy and that’s why we in a debt of Rs 30 crore.”

“The BJP-SAD alliance provided you free electricity, free water for agriculture purposes. We also provided wheat and flour at cheap rates. We started several projects and invested Rs 4000 crore for installing electricity poles and street lights,” Badal stated.

He opined, “When the Congress was in power, the state was getting only 62 MW electricity. Our government started several projects and we are planning to generate 7200 MW electricity.”

Meanwhile, taking a dig at Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh’s remark on his age, the Chief Minister said, “Let’s have a race and I will defeat the captain.”
