Lucknow, Jan 12 (Agencies): Severe cold in most parts of Uttar Pradesh claimed more six lives and took the toll to 119 in the state this winter.

Three persons, including two elderly, died in Gonda, while two people succumbed to cold in Barabanki and one death was reported from Sitapur, officials said here.

However, sunshine this morning brought some respite to people who were reeling under severe cold conditions that continued in most parts of the state, MeT department officials said.

Najibabad was the coldest place in the state with mercury settling at 2 deg C.

The capital city Lucknow recorded a minimum of 3.2 degrees Celsius, which was four notches below normal. Varanasi recorded a low of 4.1 deg C, three places below normal.

In Kanpur, mercury settled at 3.6 deg C, four degrees below normal, while minimum temperature in Allahabad was 7.3 deg C, two places below normal.

Sultanpur recorded a minimum of 2.8 deg C, down six degrees from normal, while minimum temperature in Gorakhpur was 3.3 deg C, six notches below normal.
