Mathura: Collectorate employees in Mathura went on a strike on Saturday to protest the arrest of one of their colleagues during an arson that took place here after former Chief Minister Mayawati's statue was vandalised in Lucknow.
The vandalising of Mayawati's statue in Lucknow had on Friday triggered off violence in the district. A mob had damaged several vehicles and set ablaze two tankers and a state roadways bus on Friday night.
Amin Raj Bahadur, a collectorate employee, was sent to Laxmi Nagar area by the tehsildar to persuade the mob to stop violence. He, however, was arrested in the melee despite identifying himself as a government official.
"The erring Station House Officer should be suspended for arresting a government employee on duty," Patron of UP Ministerial Employees Federation (Mathura unit) R D Sharma demanded.
Bahadur was released in the afternoon on Saturday but his agitating colleagues said their protest will continue until the SHO is suspended.
