New Delhi: Shrouded by controversies during its two year tenure, Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government's initiative to solve the major grievance of people within 100 days of coming to power still remains confined to administrative files.

Neither the poor were provided foodgrain at the promised rates nor the common man got relief from sky rocketing inflation.
After returning to power for the second time in succession, UPA government had declared its ambitious agenda full of promises.

Notwithstanding the unfulfilled promises, the UPA government is observing its second anniversary on May 22.

President Pratibha Patil declared the UPA’s 100 days agenda during the joint session of both the houses of Parliament. The promises broadly included priority areas – healthcare, rural development, human resource development, urban development and agriculture. However, not a single promise was fulfilled in the first 100 days of the government. Meanwhile, the government is maintaining silence over majority of the announcements.

Getting the Food Security and Women Reservation Bills passed in the Parliament were on the priority of the agenda. Even though the Women Reservation Bill has been passed in Rajya Sabha, its fate still hangs in balance. The fate of the Food Security Bill too remains uncertain. According to the sources, the picture would be clear only after the census of rural poor.

The government’s failure to curb the high inflation was a major disappointment for the common man. The figures are the biggest example on how the government’s efforts failed miserably to tame the high inflation. Earlier, only food inflation was high, but now the overall inflation has been on continuous rise. Similarly, the government failed to put a check on black money and bring the money stashed in Swiss banks back home.
