Lucknow: The Congress on Saturday attacked BSP supremo Mayawati for warning Uttar Pradesh government on the issue of parks and memorials set up during her tenure as Chief Minister, accusing her of using the occasion of Ambedkar's birth anniversary for vote-bank politics.

"Today is Ambedkar jayanti and it is a day to remember him and his ideology and not to politicise it ", UPCC chief Rita Bahuguna Joshi said when asked to comment on Mayawati's warning to UP government.

"Mayawati has always been indulging in vote-bank politics and she did the same today ... but this has been rejected by the people of the state as also the dalits, following which her party's strength in the assembly has come down to 80 seats in recent elections", Joshi said.

On the new government's policy on parks and monuments, she said "let them first clarify their policy".

Earlier speaking at the "dalit adhikar Sammelan" organsaied on the occasion of Ambedkar jayanti by the UPCC, Joshi said a conspiracy had been hatched by non-Congress governments since 1989 to encroach upon the rights granted in the constitution drafted by Ambedkar to all sections of society specially to dalits and women.

She said dalits were also fed up with the alleged harassment by BSP government, following which SP came to power. The UPCC president asked Congressmen to work along with dalits, especially the youth, and said their rights could be secured only by following the policies of Congress.
