Chandigarh: In order to woo Hindu voters in Punjab, the Congress has appointed Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar as the legislative party leader in state assembly. However Jakhar is yet to get official confirmation in this regard.

By appointing Jakhar as the Punjab CLP leader, the Congress has tried to widen its vote bank among Hindus and corner the government on important issues in the state assembly.

Sunil Jakhar, the son of former Lok Sabha Speaker Balram Jakhar, won Abohar seat third time in trot. By his stern questions in the assembly, Jakhar Junior puts the treasury benches in awkward position.

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal pays attention to Jakhar’s questions in the assembly.

The Congress sources said, “Party president Sonia Gandhi replaced CLP leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal with Jhakhar.”

It is for the first time since 1977 that the Congress has appointed a Hindu face as the CLP leader in Punjab.

Several party leaders are lobbying hard to the coveted post. The Congress has been giving priority to the Jat Sikh in the organization as well in the assembly.

In contrary, the SAD has been giving important posts to the Hindus in its party organization. It can be gauged with the fact that 9 Hindu MLAs have been elected on the SAD ticket in recently concluded assembly polls.

In the assembly, Jakhar starts debate on centrally sponsored schemes meant for the farmers.

Commenting on the issue, Jakhar said, “I came to know about this through media and I am yet to get official confirmation in this regard.”
His appointment to the CLP leader is likely to be announced on Monday morning.
