According to party sources, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president VM Sudheeran, Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala and other leaders participated in the process in their home units to choose office-bearers for the grassroot-level committees.
The KPCC had earlier drawn up a schedule to complete reorganization of the party units up to the district committees by this month end.
The KPCC had issued circulars to all units that apportioning of party positions on ‘group-basis’ should be avoided strictly and that disciplinary action would be taken against those violating this critical norm.
The guidelines also insisted on guarding against the possibilities of persons with criminal background getting into the party committees.
Also, it had asked the party workers to prefer for new faces in place of those who had been holding positions far too long and ensure due representation for youth and women.
While Chandy attended the meeting at his booth in his home constituency Puthupally, Sudheeran was present at the Kannamoola booth in Thiruvanathapuram.
This is the first time after 1992 that such a major exercise was being held in 21,458 booths across the state, KPCC General Secretary Thampannur Ravi said.
