New Delhi: In order to provide fillip to Congress campaign for the forthcoming Assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the UPA government is all set to review the Centre approved projects for Rae Bareli, the parliamentary constituency of party supremo Sonia Gandhi.

While the production is likely to start in the Rae Bareli Railway Coach Factory in the next few months, plans are afoot to grant a university status to the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Udan Akademi (IGRUA). Congress youth icon Rahul Gandhi had made a recent visit to Rae Bareli in this context.

In an effort to boost party’s electoral prospects, Sonia Gandhi wants the production at Rae Bareli Railway Coach Factory to start before the assembly polls.

She had requested former Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee to expedite the work. Reacting to the request, Union Minister of State for Railway, KH Muniyappa had visited her parliamentary constituency in September 2010. The Railway Officials assured that the production would be started in coming November. Sonia had laid the foundation stone of the Rae Bareli Rail Coach Factory in August 2007 in presence of the then Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The Congress wants to reap the benefits of IGRUA during the Assembly elections. Rahul requested Union Civil Aviation Minister Vayalar Ravi to grant the university status to the Akademi. Rahul also wants to set up the Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Rae Bareli.

Union Aviation Ministry has chalked out a scheme worth Rs 200 crore, under which existing runway would be expanded from current 6,000 ft to 9,000 ft which will allow the larger aircraft to land at Rae Bareli. As the number of students has been increased from 125 to 500, a proposal has been forwarded to increase the IGURA

With an expenditure of Rs 450 crores, Rajiv Gandhi Petroleum Institute is also being set up at Rae Bareli. Whereas, plans are in the pipelines to increase the number of seats in the National Institute of Fashion Technology and Leather Institute.
