Ahmedabad: The Congress has thrown its weight behind suspended IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt who had accused Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of complicity in 2002 post-Godhra riots.

Bhatt who has been sent to judicial custody was arrested on Friday in connection with an FIR filed against him by constable K D Pant.

Bhatt was held as Pant filed an FIR for allegedly threatening him and making him sign a false affidavit with regard to a meeting called by Modi on February 27, 2002, hours after the Godhra train carnage.

Meanwhile, Congress senior leaders Shakti Singh Gohit and Shankar Singh Vaghela reached Bhatt’s home to express their concerns and consoled his wife.

Putting his view, Vaghela said, “Bhatt has tried to bring the truth behind the Godhra riots. He has committed no crime. This government wants to discourage the people who are supporting the truth.”
