New Delhi: Under attack from the Team Anna over corruption, the Congress on Sunday hit out at the social activist linking him with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and went on to the extent of terming Anna Hazare as an RSS agent.

The party has sought clarification from Anna over his purported picture with RSS ideologue Nanaji Deshmukh. A Hindi newspaper published Anna’s picture with Deshmukh and wrote that he worked under the latter’s leadership in 1983.

Keeping in view the main battle for assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is trying to corner Anna Hazare, who has threatened to campaign against the party in five poll-bound states, by linking him with the RSS.

Opening the attack on Anna, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi said, “Anna should not hide his leanings and should clarify about his links with RSS.”

Meanwhile, Congress general Secretary Digvijay Singh goes all guns blazing against Anna on his Twitter account. He tweeted, “I am again proved right. Anna has refuted his links with RSS. So who should we believe? Anna or the picture published with facts.”

Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma also hit out at Anna and said, “He is an RSS agent and an Army deserter. He campaigned against Congress-NCP alliance in local bodies’ elections in Maharashtra but we came out with winning colours. Anna can perform drama only in Delhi.”

Meanwhile, Congress president Sonia Gandhi has asked the party leaders and cadres to reply to Anna electorally.

Election Commission on Saturday announced the poll dates for the assembly elections in five states. The UP will go to polls in seven phases starting from Feb 4 to 28 for 403 assembly seats.
