New Delhi: Jangipur Lok Sabha by-poll result will script new chapter in West Bengal that if Pranab Mukherjee’s  popularity remains intact in the state after his elevation to the post of President in July.

Pranab’s son Abhijit Mukherjee is contesting from the prestigious Jangipur seat vacated by his father on being elevated to the presidency. The Trinamool Congress has not fielded its candidate against Abhijit paving his smooth entry to the Lower House. Despite several ideological differences with the Congress, the TMC chose not to put spoke in the wheel of Abhijit’s victory in the by-poll.

President Pranab and WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee share cordial relation. It is evident from the fact that taking U-turn in the last minute, Mamata supported Pranab during Presidential poll.

The CPI (M) candidate Md Mozffar Hossain is giving tough fight to the Congress nominee Abhijit who aspires to inherit his father’s political legacy.

During his election campaign, Abhijit is facing severe opposition from the voters over development issues. Despite being a high profile constituency, Jangipur has witnessed no phenomenal growth during the last 8 years. Thousands of local people still have to migrate to make their both ends meet.

Abhijit presently represents Nalhati seat in the state assembly. Several star campaigners including Azharuddin, Raj Babbar have already canvassed for him. WB Pradesh Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya and senior leader Manas Bhuiyan held several public meetings in Jangipur. Berhampore MP and Congress strongman Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury is making all out effort to ensure Abhijit’s win.

Pranab had won Jangipur seat twice in 2004 and 2009. In the last Parliamentary election, Pranab won the seat by huge margin of over 1 lakh votes. It will be interesting to see if his son will retain the seat with such margin.
