The party’s foray into the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)-organized mega event will clash with the forthcoming Parliamentary elections in April-May 2014.

The move could well be an indication that the fortunes of Congress is hanging in the air given its humiliating defeat in the recent Assembly polls. Benefits of being an associate sponsor include obtaining the on-ground presence via banners, hoardings and tickets.

However, signing a political party as an associate sponsor would require a change in IPL’s sponsorship guidelines. Not only this, the Election Commission may have its own views over such a development.

The seventh edition of the tournament is reportedly bankrolled by three associate sponsors, Vodafone India Ltd, Star India Pvt. Ltd and Yes Bank Ltd.  Meanwhile, a BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that there is still a room for one more sponsor.
