Chandigarh: It seems that Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s efforts to turn convicted Khalistan militant Devinderpal Singh Bhullar’s death sentence into life imprisonment are falling apart.

After the BJP distanced itself from the Akali Dal on this matter, Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh rejected the proposal of Badal to the Congress for supporting the resolution in the state Assembly.

“The Congress is willing to convert Bhullar’s death sentence into life imprisonment, but the party will not support the Akali Dal in the Assembly. Badal’s move to provide mercy to Bhullar is politically motivated,” said Singh.

“The proposal in the Assembly will neither solve any purpose nor it will help in providing relief to Bhullar,” he added.

Singh said the case has gone back to the Supreme Court and taking up the issue in state Assembly held no meaning.

Singh  said it in order to save itself from CBI probe, the Akali-BJP government in 2008 had submitted an affidavit in the Supreme Court describing Bhullar as a "hardened criminal and a dreaded terrorist".
