Chandigarh: The state unit of the Congress party on Tuesday asked People's Party of Punjab(PPP) to support it for the upcoming Moga bypoll and withdraw the Sanjha Morcha's candidate for the same.

"He(Manpreet Badal) should give a thought (to withdraw Sanjha Morcha's candidate) and if he withdraws the candidate and supports us in by-election then we can have big change in Punjab. I think Manpreet (Badal) also wants to defeat Badals he cannot do it alone. Congress can do it so he should withdraw his candidate and support us," Punjab Congress Chief Amarinder Singh told reporters in Chandigarh on Tuesday.

He also said that he would meet the PPP leader, Surjit Singh Barnala of Shirmomani Akali Dal(Longowal), Joginder Dyal of CPI(M) in this regard to seek withdrawal of candidate for the Moga by-election next month. The former state chief minister acknowledged that during last Assembly elections, the difference between votes polled to SAD-BJP and Congress was just 1 per cent while PPP got 5 percent share.

PPP led Sanjha Morcha, comprising CPI, CPM and SAD (Longowal) had announced Ravinder Singh Dhaliwal as candidate for Moga bypoll on January 13. Moga constituency seat fell vacant when sitting Congress MLA Joinderpal Jain resigned from the Congress and joined SAD. The polling is slated for February 23.

"A committee to recommend names for Moga candidate has submitted its report and I will take this report to Delhi on Wednesday (for approval) and I hope in next couple of days, the name of Congress candidate will be announced," he said.
