Rajkot: Continuing his tirade against the Congress-led government at the Centre, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the party should be "ashamed of cheating people" by making false promises.

"Gujarat Congress recently promised to construct housing colonies for urban and rural people. But, the people of the state do not believe in its promises because they (Congress) have cheated people by not fulfilling their earlier promises," Modi said, after laying foundation stone of a multi-storeyed building here, to be built by the Rajkot Municipal Corporation and Gujarat Housing Board.

"If the government at Centre has done any good work then Gujarat Congress leaders should highlight it. Unfortunately it has not done even a single work," Modi said adding that his government has created a new tradition of launching series of developmental works in Gujarat.

He said his announcement that the state government will become bank guaranteer for the youths who approach for loan to start their own business, has baffled Congress.

In 40 years of rule, the Congress has constructed only 10 lakh houses while his government has built about 16 lakh houses and another 25 lakh would be constructed in next three years, Modi said while claiming that in the next three years, Gujarat will become a "slum-free state".

Modi also announced a Rs 10,000 crore project SAUNI (Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation) to connect 115 dams and reservoirs in Saurashtra region with Naramada river.

He appealed to the farmers to organise conventions at all the 115 places before October 8, 2012 to create awareness about the project and said he would attend them.

The project would begin from June 2013 and besides solving Saurashtra's problems of water for irrigation, it will bring a revolutionary change in state's agriculture production, Modi said.

Modi also remembered Jansangh leader Pandit Din Dayal Upadhyay on his 96th birth anniversary and said "water to every field and work to every hand was Panditji's mantra and the SAUNI project is a step to realise his dream."
