Ahmedabad: The Congress has prepared a list of candidates for by-elections to two Lok Sabha and four assembly constituencies in Gujarat.

Sources said that the party is likely to field Krishnaben Gadhvi, wife of late MP Mukesh Gadhvi against Haribhai Chaudhary of BJP from Banaskantha Lok Sabha seat. It is believed that caste equation has been kept in mind while preparing the list of candidates.

The political corridors are abuzz with speculations of state Congress chief Arjun Modhwadia’s chances of contesting from Porbandar Lok Sabha seat, while the party is mulling to field either Leuva Patel or OBC candidate from Porbandar seat.

The Congress may give party ticket to its MP Somabhai Patel’s son Pramod Patel from Limbadi Assembly seat, while a family member of late MLA Savita Khant may be fielded from Morva Hadaf.

Banaskantha Lok Sabha seat fell vacant following the death of Congress MP Mukesh Gadhvi on March 1, while Congress MP from Porbandar Vitthal Radadia resigned following his victory from Dhoraji Assembly seat in December.

Elections will be held for Banaskantha and Porbandar Lok Sabha seats and Limbadi, Jetpur, Dhoraji and Morva Hadaf Assembly constituencies.

Nominations can be filed till May 15 for June 2 by-polls. Scrutiny of nomination forms will be held on May 16 and the last date for withdrawal of nominations is May 18. The counting of votes is scheduled for June 5.

The elections are being considered as a litmus test for the Congress as all these seats were held by Congress. In the 178-member House, the ruling BJP has 115 MLAs while Congress 57, Gujarat Parivartan Party and NCP have two each and JD (U) and independents have one each.
