New Delhi: Finding itself caught in a web of controversies and scams, the ruling Congress has now questioned the very intentions of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) while preparing its report.

The office of CAG came under criticism from the treasury benches both in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha during the debate related to Sports Minister Ajay Maken’s statement on appointment of Kalmadi as CWG-OC chief.

“CAG report is not a gospel truth,” said Congress MP Manish Tewari in the Lower House, targeting the top auditing body for overreaching in its Constitutional obligations while preparing its report.

The Congress leaders directed the CAG not to breach its ambit of jurisdiction. The party members said that the work of CAG is to do audit the finances and not raise question on policy decisions like official appointments.

The recent CAG report on CWG scam has brought Sheila Dikshit government and the Prime Minister Office under scanner. While the government policies were questioned in the 2G scam, the likes of appointment of Suresah Kalmadi as CWG-OC chairman and the role of Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit is under scanner after the CAG tabled its report in the Parliament.
