New Delhi: After missing several deadlines for the announcement of first list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress is likely to release the list of 100 bona fide candidates soon.

According to the party sources, a list of candidates has been prepared for the seats where the Congress had either won or registered second position in the last Assembly polls held in 2007.

A senior party leader engaged with the selection of candidates said the final touch has been given to the first list, now it awaits the party high command’s nod for announcement.

In fact, the Congress is in a catch-22 situation over replacing the winning candidates or keeping some seats vacant in case of possible alliance with other parties.

However, Union Coal Minister and UP election campaign committee chairman Sriprakash Jaiswal does not term it as delay because the election is due in the next year.

Jaiswal said, “Given a number of people seeking the Congress ticket, the selection of candidate is not an easy task.” The Congress, he added, is determined to field winnable and honest candidates for the Assembly polls.
