Lucknow: Even if the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh has tried to placate the farmers on the land acquisition issue by announcing a new policy, the Congress is trying to score on the issue by announcing to celebrate Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi’s birthday on June 19 as the Kisan Adhikar Diwas (Farmers' Rights Day).

Speaking on the issue, state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi said, “On this day, all the leaders will hold meetings to apprise the farmers of the limitation of the new land acquisition policy announced by the state government. And they would also seek suggestions from the farmers for the changes in the proposed land acquisition bill by the Centre.”

Rahul would be apprised of the points raised by the representatives of the farmers, she added. The party leaders would then draft the points of the farmers to present it to the Prime Minister and would also urge the PM to include the points in the proposed land acquisition bill.

Congress spokesman Virender Madan said, “In view of the Mahapanchayat, the leaders of the eastern UP would hold meetings on June 12 at Faizabad and the party members of central UP would discuss the points on June 16 in Lucknow.”
