Hooghly: Congress general secretary Shakeel Ahmed on Saturday said that his party is still in favour of pushing FDI in retail and will try to convince its allies about its benefit for the common man.

"Congress supports FDI in retail, but the UPA at the
Centre has failed to implement it because of the opposition by its allies. We'll try to make them understand that it will really benefit the common people," Ahmed said.

"In fact a worker who now buys an item at Rs 25 may get it at Rs 5, since in the new system there will be no role of middleman who takes away Rs 20," he said.

Earlier INTUC President Sansiv Reddy told a union programme that the condition of workers was getting worse everyday in the new era of liberalisation because of the mad run for profit by industrialists.
