New Delhi: The return of Congress chief Sonia Gandhi from her foreign visit has brightened the possibilities the extension of state committees which have been lying in abeyance for quite some time.

The Congress is likely to soon announce the name of state party presidents of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu.
According to party sources, legislator Geeta Uraon is almost certain to take over the charge of Congress State president for Jharkhand. However, Gandhi is yet to give her consent on the issue.

Similarly, three names have been sent to the party high command for the post of WB Congress committee president. Pradip Bhattacharya, who enjoys the backing of Finance Minsiter Pranab Mukherjee, is being regarded as the front runner for the post. Adhir Ranjan Choudhury and Abdul Mannan are the two other contenders for the post.

The names of Congress national spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan, Sudershan Nachiappan and BS Gnanadesikan are in the fray for the post of party chief in Tamil Nadu. Natrajan and Nachiappan are being ranked the two major contenders for the post.

Congress may reflect reluctance in confining their lone female national spokesperson Natrajan to a state. Despite the sour relations between P Chidambaram’s son Karthik and Nachiappan, the latter’s stake for the post is believed to be strong.
