Bhopal: The Deputy leader of Congress in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Choudhary Rakesh Singh Chaturvedi said on Monday that the state government must reduce taxes on fertilisers to help farmers.

Addressing a press conference, the Singh said that he had written to the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj urging her to persuade the state government to reduce taxes on fertilisers.

Chaturvedi said there were no taxes on fertilisers in Madhya Pradesh before 2004 when the Congress was in power and pointed out that these had been imposed by the BJP government.

He said that on one hand, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan says that he is a farmer's son and on the other, his government was taxing farmers.
