New Delhi: Despite setting May 31 as the deadline for announcing the first list of party candidates for the 2012 assembly elections at Uttar Pradesh, Congress is yet to come up with the declaration in this regard.

Previously, Congress General Secretary Digvijay Singh had claimed to announce the first list of party candidates by May end. With Congress failing to make the declaration within the stipulated time period, possibilities are high that the party may announce the first list by June 4.

With BJP’s national committee meeting also scheduled at Lucknow, Congress will be aiming to declare the first list before the saffron party meet. Party sources claimed that the list has been delayed for the fact that Digvijay was out of country.

Prior to releasing the list, the Congress think-tank wants to ensure that the deserving candidates are given party ticket. As a result, Congress could not announce the first list during the visit of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to Varanasi. Thereafter, the party big wigs were engrossed at Bhatta Parsaul.

Meanwhile, Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party have already declared majority of their party candidates for the forthcoming assembly polls. Keeping the fact in mind, Digvijay had announced to declare party’s first list by May 31.
