Indore: Protesting against the rising crime in Indore district, Congressmen burnt effigies of Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Umashankar Gupta and minister-in-charge Gopal Bhargava at Ghantaghar, the police said here on Sunday.

Scores of Congressmen led by MP Pradesh Congress Committee secretary Raghu Parmar held a demonstration condemning the statement of Home Minister Gupta, who on his recent visit said that Indoreans were not in a position to "tolerate crime".

Cops tried to avert the effigy burning, but did not succeed, a local Congress spokesman said.

"Madhya Pradesh government and police failed to curb crime which is rising every day, and maintain law and order for the common man", Parmar said.

He alleged that even Minister of Panchayati Raj Gopal Bhargava, who is also minister-in-charge for Indore, failed to understand the seriousness of the situation.
