Corning today launched the latest version of its smartphone product, Gorilla Glass 4 (GG4). The company said its business has grown significantly in the last few months with the addition of many new clients.
"We started with 1-2 handset makers and in the last few months, since the introduction of GG3, we have seen strong growth in our client base," Corning Technologies India President Amit Bansal said.
He added that companies like Videocon, iBall, Lava, XOLO and Intex have come on board.
The company does not disclose country-specific financial details.
"GG4 has been formulated to address consumers' number one issue –- screen breakage from everyday drops. Through this launch, Corning looks to tap into the rapidly growing consumer electronic market in India," Bansal said.
GG4 provides at least two times improved damage resistance over competitive aluminosilicate glass, as measured by retained strength after damage events, resulting in improved mechanical durability of the glass to in-field damage events like drops, the company claimed.
Globally, over 40 manufacturers have used Gorilla Glass for a total of 1,395 product models. Since its launch in 2007, Gorilla Glass has been featured in more than three billion devices.
With a large chunk of Indian users migrating to affordable smarter devices from feature phones, smartphone sales in India are expected to cross 80 million units by the end of this year, according to research firm IDC.
