Instead of selection of office bearer of the Cotton College Teachers' Association (CCTA), election was held on Sunday when Zoology Department Associate Professor Dr Arup Kumar Hazarika was elected to the post, said the newly elected general secretary.
He defeated his nearest rival Dr Abu Mohd Pharhad Hussain, Associate Professor of the Physics Department. Since its establishment in 1901, office bearers of CCTA have been selected as decided by its members but as this time there were three candidates for the post of general secretary, the faculty members opted for democratic means, Hazarika said.
On November 8, the general meeting of the CCTA selected Dr Garima Kalita, Associate Professor of the English Department, as president of the teachers body, Hazarika said.
The new General Secretary hoped CCTA would play a positive role in the transition of the 113-year old college into the Cotton College State University as created by an Act of the Assam Government in 2011 with Cotton College as a constituent college of the new University.
