New Delhi: The holy Ganga Dussehra is celebrated on Dashami Tithi of Jyaishta Shukla Paksha and generally falls in month of May or June every year. The Ganga Dussehra is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The pious day of Ganga Dussehra is commemorated as the day when Ganga was descended to the Earth to accomplish her mission to purge the cursed souls of Bhagiratha's ancestors.

On this day, devotees worship Goddess Ganga and take a holy dip in Ganges. Taking bath in holy river and offering charity on the Ganga Dussehra day is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that holy dip in Ganges on this sacred day can purge all type of sins.

Devotees assemble to Haridwar, Rishikesh, Garhmukteshwar, Allahabad and Varanasi to take a holy dip to purify them.

Just before the auspicious day of Ganga Dussehra, thousands of devotees headed towards sacred place Haridwar. Entire Panchpuri turned into a colourful city during the Ganga Dussehra. Lots of devotees have assembled here for taking holy dip in Ganges and performing prayer to the holy River.

Har-Ki-Pauri witnessed thousands of devotees from various states including Delhi, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. The number of worshipers increased exponentially on Wednesday. This trend continues till Wednesday evening. They are eagerly waiting for performing prayer on the occasion of Ganga Dussehra and seeking blessing from the Ganges.

Huge gathering of devotees was witnessed in nearby hotels and dharamshalas. Several worshipers chose to stay at the bank of Ganges. The markets of Har-Ki-Pauri remain coulourful. The sales of Ganga water and religious items have been increased.

Sri Ganga Sabha is gearing up for Ganga Dussehra. Eleven priests will perform laghu rudrabhishek of mother Ganges at 8 am on Thursday on the occasion of Ganga Dassehra. The religious programme of mahabhishek and chhappan bhog (fifty six dishes) will be organised during the evening aarti. Prachar Mantri of Ganga Sabha Akhilesh said that cleanliness campaign will be launched for the entire two days.
