New Delhi: Teacher plays a significant role in shaping children’s life. Anybody can be your teacher whether it is your friend, family member or even a stranger. We celebrate Teachers day on 5th September to pay respect to them.

In India, 5th September is observed as the Teachers Day to celebrate Dr. Sarvepally Radhakrishnan’s birthday. Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was a philosopher and a teacher par excellence. He had made huge contribution to enhance the education levels in India.

The former President said that "instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be my proud privilege if 5th September is observed as Teachers' day".

On this occasion, we celebrate Teachers Day with great pomp and show. Senior students dress up like their teachers and teach their juniors. We celebrate the special occasion with our respected teachers and receive an encouraging lesson to succeed in life. Students organise some special activities to make their teachers feel proud and give them recognition.

Guru-Shishya Parampara

‘Guru-Shishya parampara’ has been in vogue from Vedic times. Best example of this ancient tradition is Eklavya who had given his right hand thumb to his ‘Guru’ Dronacharya as Gurudakshina. But in 21st century, scenario has totally changed.

Student-teacher relationship taking ugly turn

Today, we heard about various cases like teacher brutally thrashing student, student committing suicide, student sexually harassed by teacher, student thrashing teacher etc. Recently, a government school teacher allegedly thrashed a student of class III and broke his teeth because he failed to answer.

Another shameful incident erupted in West Bengal where a hostel warden allegedly forced a girl student to drink her own urine as a punishment. We don’t know what kind of education they are imparting to them? Are such punishments are justifiable? Such type of cases is increasing day by day. It deteriorates the ideal teacher-student relationship.

We believe that a teacher shows us a right path and grooms our personality. And once trust is broken it hurts too much. Teacher is like a candle, it consumes itself to light the way for others. They teach us how to face hurdles and difficult challenges in our life.

Those who educate children well are more to be honoured than parents, for these only gave life, those the art of living well. – Aristotle
