Bhopal: Taking cognizance of tonnes of wheat perishing in open owing to inadequate storage, Jabalpur High Court has asked the Centre and the Madhya Pradesh government to explain the reason of this laxity within three weeks.

A two judge bench of justices SR Alam and Alok Aradhe raised the question while hearing a PIL filed by a Jabalpur resident Amit Kumar.

The PIL has made allegations of severe negligence in proper storage of wheat which was bought by the government from farmers at maximum support price.

According to it, the state government has told the Centre on several occasions for distributing the wheat under various social welfare programs, but it is still waiting the nod.

18 lakh metric tonnes of wheat is reported to be lying in open and perishing. Allegation has been made that no proper action is being taken to protect the foodgrains.
