Amritsar: With an aim to provide speedy and cheap justice, the central government has initiated plans to introduce courts at block level.

While talking about Nyay Aapke Dwar Par (Justice at your doorstep) scheme, the Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said, “The courts will be set up at block levels for ensuring speedy and cheap justice to people.  These courts will come up under the Gram Nyaylayas Act 2008.

The minister said he has already written to Chief Justices of the High Courts and Chief Ministers of all the states to set up block level courts and ensure speedy and cheap justice. Kumar also gave his view on corruption in judiciary. “There is a significant rise in the cases of corruption in judiciary especially at the lower level of the system.”

When asked about capital punishment, the law minister sai, “As far as my personal views are concerned I’m not in favour of capital punishment but being a law minister I would favour it in rare of the rarest case.”

When asked about increasing the number of working days for lower courts, the minister said the powers to take decision in this regard vests in the hands of Chief Justices of High Courts.

“The evening courts were setup for the convenience of people but unfortunately it could not deliver the intended result” Kumar added.
