New Delhi: Within hours of taking over the Railway Ministry, CP Joshi on Monday called a meeting of top officials both from railways as well as Road and Highways to sort out differences between them over construction of road over and under bridges at level crossings.

The meeting assumes significance as the difference between the two ministries came in the way of expansion of highways.

The high-level meeting of officials of both ministries was called to resolve issues involving finalisation of road overbridge (ROB) and road underbridge (RUB) designs.

"Railways and NHAI should work together in finalising the designs of these bridges. They should evolve a system to standardise the designs," Joshi, who is also Minister for Road and Highways, said.

The designs should be finalised before awarding contract for these projects, he said.

There are proposals for construction of 85 ROBs at level crossings passing through national highways facing delays for over one-and-a-half years due to the Railways' objection to its designs.

Proposals for 46 ROBs were being cleared now, Joshi said, adding, "There should be time frame for finalising designs and completion of work as these are important public utility projects."

Construction of ROB and RUB are important for railways as maximum train accidents take place at unmanned crossings.

Joshi said the design should be made keeping future expansion of roads in mind. "It should not create problems during the expansion of lanes from two-lane to four-lane or six-lane," he explained.
