As per information provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), an increase of 9.2 percent was reported in crime against women during 2014 over 2013, Minister of State for Home Haribhai Parathibhai Chaudhary said in reply to a written question.
There was an increase of 53.6 percent (from 58,224 cases in 2013 to 89,423 cases in 2014) under crime against children during 2014 over 2013 respectively.
According to the NCRB report, there were 3,37,922 cases of crime against women in 2014 in comparison to 3,09,546 such cases in 2013.
"As per the seventh schedule to the Constitution of India Police and Public Order are State subjects and, as such, the primary responsibility of prevention, detection, registration, investigation and prosecution of crime, lies with the State Governments/ Union Territory Administrations," he said.
