The referendum in Crimea is taking place despite international warnings that the voting will not be recognized.

Tuesday's declaration from the Crimea government announced that if its population votes in favor of joining Russia on Sunday, it will ask the Russian Federation if it can join Moscow. The Russian Parliament announced it would debate whether to accept Crimea as part of the country on March 21.

US Congress had asked Russia to withdraw its forces or face repercussions in the form of economic sanctions if it failed to do so.  US Secretary of State, John Kerry, had earlier warned Russia of being shown the door at the G8 summit due in June this year.

Crimea has been flooded by the Russian forces which took over government buildings and hoisted flags on top of the building. The region in Ukraine has been witnessing pro-Russia rallies after the ouster of former president Viktor Yanukovych.
