New Delhi: Despite putting in all efforts, Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is yet to complete the construction of Vasantkunj flats. DDA had assigned the work to 16 contractors at enhanced rates but the construction of flats could not be completed within stipulated time.

The DDA, which earlier had given the work to two contractors only, had spent Rs 6 crore instead of Rs 4 crore to ensure that the work gets completed by September 2010. But the contractors, despite the increased cost failed to complete the construction on time.

On the other side, DDA had sold 32 plots for the construction of five-star hotels five years back. In 2009, when it observed that the work wouldn’t be completed on time, the civic body decided to accommodate guests during the Commonwealth Games in its Vasantkunj flats and provide them with five-star facilities.

But the construction of these flats also got delayed and the matter was reported to the Lt-Governor in July 2010. The then DDA member, Engineering, A K Bajaj had accepted that it was not possible to complete the construction. Subsequently, he was removed from the project and it was handed over to DDA member, Finance, Nandlal.

Till then, only 800 flats could be completed. DDA had proposed the names of more companies for speedy completion of the work. It withdrew the contract of 400 flats from Brahmaputra and Mehta & Company and awarded the assignment to 16 new companies for 16 towers.

Out of 16, only 12 companies could start their work. The cost of construction was doubled and the deadline was September 15, 2010, but the work could not be completed on time.
