Burdwan: A local court on Thursday awarded death sentence to a youth after he was convicted of rape and murder of a school girl, about a year back, at Ausgram in Burdwan district.

Additional Sessions judge Somnath Bandyopadhyay ordered the capital punishment for the convict Binay Bagdi as he was convicted of raping and then throttling to death the 14-year old schoolgirl on April 21, 2011.

The court also slapped Rs 2,000 as fine on 34-year old Bagdi to be realised before the execution of the death sentence.

The judge referred to another rape charge against him four years back for which he had secured a bail and said his acts only showed that such a person deserved the maximum punishment as he can't reform himself now and hence the death penalty may act as possible deterrent for similar offenders in society.

According to the prosecution, the 14-year old had gone out of home on April 21, last year to watch TV but was lured by Binay on the pretext of giving chocolate and then raped and murdered at a secluded spot not far from her home.

After her badly decomposed body was found on the side of a nearby waterbody on May 3, Binay was arrested as he was last seen speaking with the girl and then confessed his act to the interrogators.
